• 2.04.4 Cultural and Historic Resource Information
The Golden Eagle Mine is located in an area which has
historically been a mining and ranching community. The majority
of the area BRI plans to mine is located on the Maxwell Land
Grant. The land was settled during the middle and late 1800's.
Little or no information currently exists on the cultural and
historic resources of the proposed affected area. Historic
information associated with the region centers around the town of
Trinidad, Colorado. Trinidad has historically served as the hub
for economic and cultural activities. Figure 2, Archaeology
Survey Area, and Map 10, Surface Facilities and Roads show the
relative proximity of the area surveyed with the surface
facilities of the Golden Eagle Mine. The survey was conducted
for only the area potentially affected by the Ciruela Canyon
diversion. A literature search was conducted by the Colorado
Historical Society to determine if any cultural or historic
• resources listed on the National Register of Historic Places are
located within the permit area of the Golden Eagle Mine. Exhibit
5, Cultural and Historic Resource Information, contains the
report on the archaeological investigations of the Golden Eagle
Mine area and the letter from the Colorado Historical Society.
During mid 1988, a 40 acre parcel of United States coal was added
to the mineable coal reserve for the project (Technical
Revision 08). Exhibit 5, Cultural and Historic Resource
Information, also contains a letter from the Colorado Historic
Society which indicates that no known cultural resources exist on
the surface of that area.
The only resource identified during the survey was a
limited lithic scatter as shown on Figure 2, Archaeology Survey
Area. This resource was not disturbed during the channel
relocation constructed in 1980 and sediment pond construction in
1985 and is not planned to be disturbed by future operations.
• 2.04-4 (Revised 09/01/89)
