towazd the river (west to east). The secondary terrace of the river is located along the
west boundary of the site parcels north of Colorado Highway 7. The slope sepazating the
two terraces rises abruptly (approximately 40 feet). Other topographic features include
natural and constructed depressions along the west boundary of the site, a discontinuous
Swale located within the east half of the site and a branch of the Brighton Ditch that forms
both the south and west boundary of portions of the site. Earthen levees aze located along
the east boundary ofthe project site adjacent to the South Platte River.
[vegetation
Three vegetation communities chazacteristic of wetlands within the site can be broadly
categorized as sideslope seep, depression, and Swale. The sideslope seep is located along
portions of the west boundary of the site topographically below the Brighton Ditch and
north of Colorado Highway 7. The depression vegetation commutties aze also located
neaz the west boundary of the site north of the state highway. A discontinuous swa(e,
ending at the earthen levee is located within the east half of the site north of the state
highway. Each community is briefly described below.
The sideslope seep consists of a mosaic of hydrophytic vegetation located along a portion
of the slope below the secondary terrace and the Brighton Ditch. Vegetation is dominated
by three square (Scirpus americanus), curly dock (Rumex crispus), reed canarygrass
(Phalaris arundinacea), rabbitfootgrass (Polypogon monspeliensis), and meadow foxtail
(Hordeum jubatum).
Vegetation. withi:. zne depression areas consists cf ~..zttails (Typha l~tfclia),
rabbitfooterass, reed canarygrass, meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis), meadow foatail,
prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola), prairie cordgrass (Spartina pectinata), and three
square.
Two depressions at the west end of the discontinuous Swale (west of the levee) consists of
a central monaculturai stand of cattails with a fringe of rbbitfootgrass, meadow foxtail,
three squaze, prickly lettuce, baltic rush (Juncos balticus), and horseweed (Conyza
canadensis). The Swale is discontinuous as it continues east toward the South Platte
River where it terminates at the earthen levee. East of the levee vegetation consists of a
mosaic of various weedy plant species with very small inclusions of cattails.
Hydrolo~%
The most significant hydrologic feature within and adjacent to the site is the South Platte
River, located along the east boundary. Other hydrologic features include a branch of the
Brighton Ditch that forms both the south and west boundary of portions of the site.
Tucson Project Jurisdictional Wetland Delineation and Determination Page 2
