• Mapping Unit Number 109E -Absarokee -Work L.oams -The Absarokee and Work soils comprise 40
percent of the complex. Included in this complex in mapping area a few small areas of Beenom, Kech,
Progresso, Potts, and some Ouvent lands.
The Absarokee soil is a moderately deep, well drained soil over sandstone at a depth of 20 to 40 inches. It
formed in materials weathered from sandstone.
It is grayish brown to brown in color and moderate medium textured structure.
The Work Soil is a deep well drained soil which may be over sandstones at depths of 40 to 60 inches. [t
Cormcd in materials weathered from sandstone and reworked aeolian materials. It is dark brown to brown
in color and moderate medium texture to moderate fine granular to massive.
Classification of Major Components -The components listed below comprise the major parts of the
mapping unit
A. Typic Acriborolls
1. Fine, montmorillonitic.
(Absarokee Series)
(Work Series)
Extent and Major Areas of Occurrence -These moderately sloping to moderately steep soils are on
uplands and valley sideslopes at elevations of 6,800 to 8,500 feet.
Characteristic Topograohv -The Absarokee soil occupies the steeper slopes and small ridges while the
Work soil occupies the depressions and swales. Slopes are 6 to 25 percent.
• Physical Properties -The Absarokee soil has very low permeability and the available water supply is low.
Thc effective rooting depth is 20 to 40 inches. Surface runoff is medium and erosion hazard is slight from
wind and moderate from water. The soil should be maintained in legumes, grass or close-growing crops at
(cast one-half of the time. Moisture intake rate is moderate to low and the soil should be worked at its
proper moisture content.
The Work soil has low permeability and the available water capacity is high. The effective rooting depth
extends to 60 inches or more. Surface runoff is medium and erosion hazard is light from wind and
moderate to high from water. Seeding is advisable if range is in poor condition.
Suitable for seeding are bluebunch wheatgrass, western wheatgrass, and needlegrass.
Chemical Prooerties and Natural Fertility -These items were not available through the SCS at the time
the survey was conducted.
Mapping Unit ]O1F -Beenom -Absarokee Association -The beenom soil makes up about 50 percent of
this association, while the Absarokee soil makes up about 30 percent. Included in this area are a tew areas
of Kech, Progresso, and Work Soils. Rock outcrops, very shallow soils, and deep stony soils are also
included which comprise up to 20 percent.
Thc Beenom soil is a shallow well drained soils over bedrock at a depth of 10 to 20 inches. It formed in
place from material weathered from sandstone and interbedded shale. It is grayish brown to dark brown in
color and moderate medium granular textured.
Thc Absarokee soil is swell-drained soil over bedrock at a depth of 10 to 20 inches. It formed in locally
• transported sediments derived from sandstone and interbedded shale.
