M03107GE
engineering recommendations for constructing compacted structural •
fill are presented below.
As an alternative to supporting the footings on a blanket of
compacted structural fill the foundations may be designed with
additional structural reinforcing to bridge point loads which may
be applied on the foundations supported on cobbles. The additional
structural reinforcing should be adequate to bridge a point load
equal to the bearing pressures of several linear feet of the
footing without allowing the footing or foundation wall to crack.
The structural engineer should be contacted to provide the founda-
tion structural design. If the foundations are adequately rein-
forced to bridge point loads, then the footings may be supported on
the natural exposed compacted soil materials and designed using the
bearing capacity provided below. We are available to discuss this
concept with you. ,
The structure may be founded on spread footings. Spread footings
may be placed either on the natural undisturbed soils or on a
blanket of compacted structural fill. The blanket of compacted
structural fill is to help provide uniform support for the footings
and to help reduce the anticipated post construction settlement.
The anticipated post construction settlement and associated fill
thickness supporting the footings are presented below. If 'the
footings are supported on a blanket of compacted structural fill
the blanket of compacted structural fill should extend beyond each •
edge of each footing a distance at least equal to the fill thick-
ness. This concept is shown on Figure 8. Geotechnical engineering
recommendations for constructing compacted structural fill are
presented below.
A blanket of compacted fill will help to mask the influence of
the.measured swell pressures when the foundation soils become
wetted, If you choose spread footings we strongly recommend high
design dead load, deep embedment and a thick fill blanket.
The bearing capacity will depend on the minimum depth of embedm-
ent of the bottom of the footings below the lowest adjacent grade
and the support characteristics of the soils supporting the founda-
tion. Other characteristics may influence embedment. The embed-
ment concept is shown on Figure 9. Bearing capacity and associated
minimum depth of embedment of the bottom of the footing below the
lowest adjacent grade are presented below.
10

Lambert ana ~~,~ociates
CONSUI LING GEUTE CIINIGI ENUIN EEHS ANN
MAItHIAL Ik511NU
