on terraces, on saddles, or on passes (no passes are •
Located within this survey area). McNamara (1978) reported
on one site, which was located on a sage flat in a drainage
bottom.
All three sites defined as campsites (5RT139,
SRT142, and 5RT145) are located in immediate proximity
to seasonally ave~ilable .water. Sites 5RT139 and SRT142
are Located adjacent to permanent water. Sites 5RT139
and 5RT142 are located below a small saddle, and 5RT142 is
located on a valley floor. While the location of 5RT142
is similar to the site reported by McNamara (1978), the
location of 5RT1..9 and 5RT145 is not similar to the reported
sites from the area. Ward-Williams (1975) found sites to
be located on saddles, but these sites are below the saddle.
Proximity to a water source appears to be the unifying
characteristic of site location in the area, as all reported
campsites are near water. .-
Unfortunately, it is impossible to discuss comparative
~'
locations of Limited activity sites. Definitions of what
is a campsite and what is a limited activity site have
either not been explicit or have been different in every
case discussed. Concerning 5RT147, all evidence indicates
that biface manufacture was the function of this site.
Most situations are not as clear. By using Arthur's
(1977) definition requiring the presence of "domestic
artifacts" or features in a campsite, SRT139 and 5RT145
would not be considered campsites.
In a broader sense, evidence has been found of pre-
historic utilization of the study area. This evidence has
taken the form of campsites, lithic manufacture sites,
and isolated artifacts. Two portions of the sequence
of lithic tool manufacture are absent: evidence of raw
material procurement, and ground stone manufacture.
Other activities that almost certainly took place include
•
36
