• In summary, the research problems presented in the
Previous Research section are: (1) Great Basin-Plains
relationships, (2) settlement patterns, and (3) Paleo-
Indian occupations. Though the data produced by this
inventory are limited, it is possible to address certain
aspects of all of these research problems.
Site 5RT139 provides data relevant to both Great
Basin-Plains relationships and the Pa1eo-Indian occupation
of the region. The Cody Complex dates at around 9000 BP
and is generally associated with the Plains, though it is
known from the Great BasinS(Lindsay 1976; Kvamme 1979).
Desert Archaic material (dated 8000 BP) is known from the
northern Colorado Plateau (Holmer 1978) but, at this time,
there is no Archaic material from the Plains. Just after
8000 BP, the altithermal occurred, reducing or removing
populations in the Plains and Great Basin (Benedict and
Olson 1978; Holmer 1978). During this altithermal, occu-
pants of the region, hypothetically, withdrew to high
altitude refuges and developed the Early Archaic tradition,
which may have expanded into the McKean Technocomplex
(Benedict 1973). Reoccupation of the Plains and the
Great Basin apparently took place after the altithermal.
The fact that the Cody Complex occurs prior to the
altithermal, and that this site is geographically between
the Great Basin and the Plains, suggests that this site
potentially contains data relevant to addressing the
question of Great Basin-Plains relationships. The fact
that the Cody Complex is by definition a Pa1eo-Indian com-
plex indicates that 5RT139 may contain data relevant to
the question of Paleo-Indian occupation of the area.
Data recovered from this project have added variability
to the settlement pattern of the area. Arthur (1977) found
sites to be located on small eminences overlooking drainages.
• Ward-Williams (197'6) found sites to be located near water,
35
