• This test excavation-determination of significance
should accomplish several goals. The first is to determine
if subsurface deposits are or are not significant. The "
seccrd, and corollary, goal is the location and isolation of
discrete cultural units within the site. The attainment of
these goals Leads directly to the third. If the cultural
deposits are determined to be significant, the information
produced by attaining the first two goals should assist in
the construction of an appropriate research design-excavation
plan to adequately mitigate the adverse impact of mining
activity.
SRT142 (Map-7, Table 4)
Though a Large amount of material is not apparent on
the surface of this site, all of the disccvered material
is the result of erosional situations. The site is located
on born sides of an ephemeral drainage. Furthermore, the
• varied activities indicated by discovered material indicate
that this is a habitation site. Since this site is within
the maximum grading disturbance Line, and will receive direct
impact, testing Co determine the provenience of, and form
of buried material is recommended. The necessity of further
work should be determined on the basis of testing results.
It is further recommended that testing to determine
if significant subsurface deposits exist take the form cf
the excavation of four one-by-one meter test pits, after sur-
face mapping and cleaning arroyo walls to examine subsurface
deposits. Two pits should be placed on each side of the arroyo
and excavated to a depth aE Least equal to the depth of the
arroyo. If subsurface material is recovered, an assessment
of significance can be made, and if necessary, subsequent
mitigation plans can be based on testing results.
SRT145 (Map 8, Table 4)
• The Low density of artifactual material and Lack of
evidence of buried cultural material indicate there is a
31
