in the arroyo is more lush than that above in the big sage/ •
scrub community. Identified plants include scrub oak,
aspen, snowberry, yarrow, thistle, various grasses, and
big sage.
The vegetative evidence indicates there is a spring
on the site. The presence of the spring and the size and
form of the structure suggest that this is a spring house,
associated with nearby ranching and/or farming activity.
SRT147
This is an extremely sparse lithic scatter located
on a gentle sage and scrub covered slope with a southern
exposure (see Map 10). Material was originally discovered
to the south of the road, which bisects the site, and to the
east of a seismic line.
Later examination identified debitage in the road
for more than 100 meters. The presence of debitage in •
unimpacted areas as well as in impacted areas suggests
that this is more of an erosional situation than sites such
as SRT139. In this case, it appears that surface material
has been subject to sheet wash erosion. The Length of the
site in the road, and not in unimpacted areas, is probably
due to earthmoving activities rather than original proven-
ience of the artifacts.
The observed material includes two biface fragments,
one of which appears to have been broken during manufac-
ture, biface reduction flakes, and several flakes with
absent platforms. The flakes with absent platforms are
probably also biface reduction flakes, but without a plat-
form this is not certain.
On the basis of the observed material and the
sparsity .of this material, this site is most likely a
limited site where biface manufacture was the primary
activity. •
28
