SRT142

This is a sparse lithic scatter which was probably
a campsite Map 7). The site is on a small valley
floor, and up a hillside to the west. A small spring-fed
arroyo passes through the site, which is in the big sage.
vegetative community with snowberry as a component.
Exposure is to the south.
Observed artifacts include a mano, two bifaces,
interior flakes, pressure flakes, biface reduction flakes,
and a flake exhibiting scraper-type wear. Activities in-
ferable from this material include vegetable food prepara-
tion, biface manufacture, scraping, tertiary core reduction,
and pressure flaking.
With the exception of four flakes, all of the dis-
covered material was taken from the sides and bottom of the
arroyo. The four flakes were on the hillside.
Though this site is quite sparse on the surface, all •
the material encountered was in an erosional situation (on
a relatively steep slope or in the arroyo). This suggests
that there is buried material present.
5RT145
This an extremely Large, extremely diffuse lithic
scatter, separated from 5RT139 by a saddle to the northwest
(see Map S). Steeper, higher ridges Lay to the north and
south. A small drainage runs through the site, and another
to the northeast. These drainages join immediately to the
east of the site and open onto SRT142 about .5 km to the
southeast. The site lies on a small finger between the two
drainages (Area A), and a small bench on the southern sic'e of
the ridge (Area B).
On-site vegetation is primarily a big sage community
with some scrub oak stands.
