It was pre-
pared under the Department of the Interior Professional
Services Antiquities Permit No. 78-CO-124 which expires on
January 15, 1980, and Colorado State Permit No. 79-47 by
Western Cultural Resource Management, Inc. at the request of
Seneca Coals, Limited, to discover and assess prehistoric
and historic cultural resources on properties intended for
impact by coal mining activity.
Project Obiectives
The objectives of this project were several. The
first was to confer with appropriate state and federal agencies
• to determine the presence of previously recorded cultural
resources and to determine up-to-date relevant cultural re-
source policy. The second was to review all appropriate
archaeological literature and state and federal files and
registers. The third was to conduct the fieldwork in three
stages: (1) reconnaissance, (2) intensive survey, and
(3) field analysis. The survey was to consist of 100%
coverage of the project area, evaluating all encountered
cultural resources for significance and possible mitigation
according to federal regulations (36CFR800).
Project Location
The project is located southwest of Hayden and between
Craig and Steamboat Springs, Colorado (see Maps 1, 2, and 4).
It is in Routt County, in portions of Sections 1, 2, 11, 12,
and 13 of Township 5N, Range 87W; and portions of Sections
• 35 and 36, Township 6N, Range 87W.
