ABSTRACT <br />• Between September 23 and 29, 1979, western Cultural <br />Resource Management, Inc. performed a cultural resource in- <br />ventory on land intended for impact by the expansion of the <br />Seneca II Coal Mine of Seneca Coals, Limited (see Map 1). <br />Five sites and four isolated artifacts were Located within <br />the "life of the mine" boundary. <br />Two of the sites are recommended for testing to <br />determine eligibility to the National Register of Historic <br />Places, and excavation if found to be eligible. Site 5RT139 <br />is probably eligible to the National Register of Historic <br />Places. Testing and probably excavation, based on testing <br />results, is recommended. Site 5RT142 may contain signifi- <br />cant subsurface material. Testing to determine the presence <br />or absence of significant subsurface material, and the need <br />for excavation or protection from increased erosion, based on <br />testing results, is recommended. All other cultural resources <br />• are recommended to receive no further work. <br />Diagnostic material indicates the presence of Cody <br />Complex peoples within the Paleo-Indian period, and historic <br />occupants utilizing the area for ranching and/or farming. <br />An additional report, dealing with the one-mile <br />buffer zone, required by the Office of Surface Mining, is <br />under separate cover. <br />This report was prepared under Colorado State Permit <br />No. 79-47 and Department of the Interior Professional Services <br />Antiquities Permit No. 78-CO-124. <br />C~ <br />viii <br />
