• 2.05.6
(2} Fish and Wildlife Plan
(a)(i) The Division of Wildlife's letter dated December 21, 1995 (Volume III, Exhibit 9)
listed its recommendations tomitigate the impact of the mining operation on wildlife
in the area. Following is a narrative of the applicant's capability to perform the
Division's recommendations:
DOW - As little removal of existing vegetation as possible is recommended
unless done under a mitigation plan for enhancement of vegetation and
wildlife habitat.
Applicant -Will remove as little of the existing vegetation as possible.
DOW - On the lower portion of the site, there should be minimal clearing of
pinon juniper woodlands. This component of habitat is extremely important
in this particular location for thermal hiding cover for wildlife, and particularly
for mule deer.
• Applicant -The clearing of the lower portion of the site is predominantly
required for the haul roads, access roads and conveyor corridor. Clearing
within the pinon-juniper woodlands will be kept to a minimum.
DOW - As large a buffer from cliffs as possible should be left. The
recommended buffer is usually 'h mile but in this case that is almost
impossible due to topography,
Applicant - No comment required.
DOW -All new power poles which are installed for this project should be of
a design which discourages raptor use or of a design which allows raptors
to use them in a safe manner. Specifications are available from the U. S.
Fish and Wildlife Service in Grand Junction.
Applicant -All new power poles will be designed as recommended by the
DOW.
•
PR-04 2.05 - 62 - 01/01
