Section 780.18(b) Continued. <br />Grading and recontouring of mined-out areas will result in effective <br />drainage, and a stable configuration blending with surrounding <br />reclaimed and undisturbed areas. The resultant landscape will be <br />similar to premine and adjacent slopes, The postmining landscape <br />will be characterized by relatively short slopes and a relatively <br />flat terrain broken up by undulations created during the restoration <br />of existing draws and ridges. Terraces are not proposed as a method <br />of landscape stabilization. As discussed on pages 780-80 to 780-82, <br />slope lengths will be controlled by the construction of small contour <br />furrows. Figure 19, Typical Design of Contour Furrow, contains a <br />cross-section of this proposed stabilization technique. A discussion <br />of the beneficial effects of contour furrowing for erosion control <br />and the hydrologic balance is found on pages 780-80 to 780-82. <br />Smooth compacted surfaces with long slopes will be avoided by grading <br />_ along the contour and by leaving the surface in a rough state so that <br />erosion and subsequent sedimentation problems are reduced. When <br />possible, final grading before topsoil placement will be done along <br />contour by dozers and motorgraders unless site specific slope <br />conditions would cause a safety hazard to the operator. In the event <br />that final grading occurs more than two weeks prior to soil <br />replacement, Kerr will rip the final graded surface prior to <br />placement of soil. <br />Postmining topography and slopes will approximately match the <br />premining topography and slopes. (See: Map 34a, Kerr Mine Area <br />Premining Topography; Map 36, Kerr Mine Area Postmining Topography; <br />and Map 38, Premining and Postmining Cross Sections (Kerr Mine <br />Area).)
