•
a
r-
Section 780.18 (b) Continued.
Wind and crater erosion will be controlled prior to seeding by leaving the
reapplied topsoil in a rough condition. When planting conditions are
suitable, the entire area will be prepared for seeding by leveling, chisel
plowing, and disking. I~rmediately following seeding, the entire area will be
contour furrowed to reduce the erosion potential, and to maintain site
stability until such time as the revegetation is sufficiently established.
Topsoil and Subsoil Redistribution Plan -Kerr Tipple Area
Following dismantling of all the coal preparation facilities located at the
Kerr Tipple, the area will be recontoured as described previously. Due to
the fact that topsoils wire not salvaged in 1974 when this facility was
constructed, topsoil is not available from stockpiles for reapplication.
Topsoil that is uncovered during the recontouring operations will be
segregated from the fill material and will be reapplied to the fill material
at a depth of approximately two inches.
Topsoil quality and quantity appear adequate for this purpose. Table 45,
Soil Chemical and Physical Properties Lab Analysis Kerr Tipple Area and Table
7.0, Kerr Tipple Area Soil Plan show that no grcxvth inhibiting properties are
present in either the topsoil or fill material found in this area.
Reapplication of two inches of topsoil in other areas (Sindelar et. al 1974
and Power et. al. 1976) has been found to be superior to the use of raw spoil
as plant grcxvth mediwn. Sindelar et. al. (1974) reported that reapplication
of two inches of topsoil on good spoil material was as good as the
application of 8 inches of topsoil in supporting a perennial grass mixture.
Since these authors document the advantages of using only two inches of
topsoil and
H:\857\VOL.2\780REV.
