Defer seeded area from all use by Livestock for at least
' year period or until grass is established. This may req~
of the critical area.
Seedbed Preparation for Very Steep Slopes
of
f
before
t.
r.
a two
sire fencing
1. Cut ridges, diversions or channels above and across slops to catch
excessive water and divert it off of disturbed area. Sp cing of
these will depend on degree of slope and intensity of ra n. The
steeper the slope, the greater the intensity of rains th closer
the ridges, diversions or channels. Broadcast seed and rag, spike
tooth harrow, chain logs, anything that will scarify soi and
cover seed with some soil.
2. Run bulldozer with tracks up and down slope. The track ill
Leave depressions perpendicular to the slope. These dep essions
will catch the seed that is broadcast, hold any precipit lion
on the slope and help control the movement of soil off t e
disturbed area. Broadcast seed before equipment goes ov r area
for this final operation. The movement of the equipment will
tend to cover seed with soil.
3. Leave area without the final smoothing operation. Leave the
surface rough with ridges and depressions. This will sl w
the runoff down to allow it to percolate into soil and r duce
erosion. Broadcast seed and drag, spike tooth harrow, c ain
logs, anything that will scarify soil and cover seed wit some
soil.
If site is to extreme for these practices broadcast seed ove
the area and cover with mulch or net will be needed. Wood c ip
mulch is very well suited for mountain sites, since a supply of
chips is readily available in these areas. These will help e-
duce erosion and loss of soil moisture through evaporation.
