Slopes of 6:1 or
flatter are much more desirable for greater success 'n
re-establishment of vegetation and operation of equi ment.
B. Excess water from adjacent areas should not be allow d to
flow onto the area unless erosion control practices re
implemented.
C. Length of slope should be properly controlled to pre ent
erosion.
D. Topsoil is needed on sites having exposed soil surfa es
Low in organic material and texture classification o
~ clay Loam or heavier. This need increases significa tly
if the soils are inherently dry, if the slopes are
greater than 6:1 and if the slope aspect is south or
southwest. Topsoil should be applied after shaping nd tilled
to a depth of 6 inches binding topsoil to existing s i1.
2. Fertilization
A. Fertilizer of not Less than 40 lbs. nitrogen and 40 bs.
phosphorous should be applied unless a soil analysis indicates
sufficient amounts of these elements. Application o
fertilizers should be immediately prior to or at the time
of seeding.
3. Seedbed Preparation
A. The seedbed should be prepared immediately following all
earth moving operations prescribed in the engineerin and
landscape design.
B. AL1 rocks, trash and other debris that will interfer with
seeding should be removed. Till the ground to a dep h of
4 to 6 inches. If the seedbed is prepared immediate y
following construction this operation can usually be omitted,
except on fresh cut areas that have not otherwise be n
disturbed. Apply fertilizer, seed and mulch, if nee ed.
4. Mul ching
A. A mulch may be needed to conserve moisture, prevent
crusting, reduce runoff and erosio~i and help establi h
a plant cover.
B. Mulching material should be applied immediately befo a or
after seeding.
C. Either one of the mulching methods listed below woul be
acceptable.
1. Grass hay or cereal grain straw should be used a
an application rate of 4,000 lbs./ac. of air dry material.
At least 50% of the mulch by weight shall be LO ' nches
or more in length. Anchor mulch immediately aft r
distributing with mulch crimper or disc plow.
