<br />I. B,ckground: <br />This report applies to the Moffat County Road Department's Free <br />Use Permit application for sand and gravel. The Free Use Permit <br />area is as shown on the attached map, The gravel would be used <br />as road surfacing material for county roads in the area. <br />Physical Settin:;: <br />The subject area is about six miles south of Lay, Colorado and on <br />the south bench above the drainage of the Yampa River, It is <br />one-third mile west of the intersection of county roads 17 and 55 <br />and the area is accessible by existing roads. <br />II. Ceolog~ <br />Stra[icraphy: <br />Only the strata visibly noted in the area or strata of economic <br />mineral value or importance will be considered in this report. <br />Quaternary: <br />The source material for the proposed operation consists of a terrace <br />deposit which caps a pediment surface formed by the Piancos Formation <br />of Upper Cretaceous Age. The material consists of a coarse gravel <br />deposit, composed of subrounded to rounded constituents varyiag in <br />size from pebble to boulder, and contained within a sandy soil matrix. <br />The material is mostly of igneous origin, with lesser amounts of <br />sedimentary material. <br />
