23
. lithic scatter composed of felsite cores, debitage, and a single quartzite mano. It is located on the
top of a large bench overlooking Cow Canyon Creek to the southeast, and the Purgatoire River to
the northeast. The lithic scatter is composed mostly of primary and secondary felsite flakes and five
felsite cores. One quartzite flake was noted as well. The soil is an alluvial and residual gravelly
loam. On-site vegetation consists of a few pinon and juniper with shrubs being the dominant
species. Short grasses, annuals, and forbs also are present.
This site lies within the LCRHL and is recommended to be potentially contributing to the
significance of the district. The site contains ground stone and may reflect activities related to the
procurement and initial processing of pinon nut and acorns. The deposits on the site have the
potential to contain additional significant cultural remains which may provide additional important
information on the prehistory of the area.
SLA7729 (MM-4828): This prehistoric site was recorded during inventory ofsedimentation
Ponds 008 and 009 and Fill Area 8 in 1997. It lies on a bench west of the bounds of Sedimentation
pond 008 and may not be impacted. SLA7729 consists of a very low density scatter of lithic
debitage, a metate fragment, a core, and a hammer stone situated on a east-west trending bench
overlooking Cow Canyon Creek to the west, and the Purgatoire River to the north. Examination of
the cutbanks show soil deposits on the site are less than 20 cm thick and failed to reveal evidence
of any additional subsurface cultural materials. The site has been moderately impacted by erosion
and cattle grazing activity. On-site vegetation consists of a large shrubs (oakbrush, mountain
• mahogany) with a few pinon andjuniper. Low sagebrush, short grasses, annuals, and forbs also are
present.
Although there is little potential buried cultural material, this site lies within the LCRHL and
is recommended to be potentially contributing to the significance of the district. The site contains
ground stone and may reflect activities related to the procurement and initial processing of pinon nut
and acorns.
Management Recommendations
Cultural resource clearance is recommended for the new alignment of the P3 haul road, the
realigned Lorencito Canyon access road, the rail spur, the Rl/R2 haul road, and the load out facility
with some exceptions and conditions. Clearance is recommended for the realigned P3 haul road, the
realigned Lorencito Canyon access road, and the coal load out facility with the exception of those
parts of all three that will impact any portion of site SLA7186 (Jeff Place). Cultural resource
clearance for these parts is contingent upon the completion and acceptance of the final report of data
recovery excavations described in the treatment plan for the site (see McKibbin and Carrillo 1997).
Until that time if Lorencito desires to construct any of these facilities, the site must be protected by
a fence, or other clear marking, and all construction must stay outside the designated site boundaries.
The recommendation for cultural resource clearance of the realigned P3 haul road and for the R 1 /R2
• haul road is also contingent upon avoidance of the potentially significant areas of sites SLA7181 and
SLA7208, respectively.
