• to the significance of the district. The portions of the site SLA7181 with the potential to contain
significant cultural materials are located northwest of the proposed P3 haul road. Lorencito mine
representatives have assured MAC that the potentially contributing portions of the site can be
avoided. Cultural resourceclearance isrecommended forthe P3 haul road provided that contributing
portions of site SLA7 f 81 are avoided and except for the portion lying within the boundaries of site
SLA7186. This recommendation is also contingent upon the preparation and implementation of a
data recovery program for this district.
The Rl/R2 haul road was inventoried in 1996 and twelve sites were recorded (SLA7204-
7213, SLA7184, SLA7185). These sites aze part of the rural historic landscape and ~LA7208 is
recommended as a contributing to its significance. Avoidance of portions of this site that have the
potential to contain significant cultural materials isrecommended, thus cultural resource clearance
isrecommended for the R 1 /R2 haul road provided contributing portions of5LA7208 can be avoided.
Several additional facilities proposed for the mine site which are not part of the previously
submitted work plan included several proposed sedimentation ponds and fill areas, proposed power
lines to the load out facility and P3 portal, and a proposed water line to the P3 portal location. Three
prehistoric sites (SLA7727-7729), eight prehistoric isolated finds (SLA7730-7737), and two
unrecorded segments of the historic Colorado and Wyoming Railroad (SLA71 12.14, SLA7112. l5)
were recorded. In addition, two previously recorded prehistoric sites (SLA6966, SLA6967) and a
previously recorded historic church (SLA 1966) lie within these project areas.
• All the prehistoric sites lies within the LCRHL. SLA7728 and SLA7729 are recommended
as potentially contributing; SLA6966, SLA6967, and SLA7727 are recommended as not
contributing to the significance of the district. No further work is recommended on SLA6966,
SLA6967 and SLA7727. SLA7728 is located outside the actual alignment for the power line to the
P3 portal. SLA7729 lies outside the proposed bounds of Sedimentation Pond 008. Cultural resource
clearance is recommended contingent upon the development and implementation of a data recovery
program for the district.
To avoid indirectly impacting SLA1966, which has potential to be part ofmultiple property
nomination of historic churches in the Picketwire Valley or a Medina Plaza historic district in the
future, it isrecommended that the power line to the P3 portal be realigned, taking a southerly course
to the mine permit boundary from its northern terminus at the existing power line. No further work
is recommended on the site provided the recommended realignment is followed.
The Colorado and Wyoming Railroad (SLA7l l2) has been recotrtmended as eligible for
inclusion on the National Register. No assessment has been made on the entire resource by the State
Historic Preservation Officer. Both segments (SLA7112.14, SLA7l 12.15) of the railroad lying
within the current project area are evaluated as contributing to the site's overall eligibility. The
proposed power lines will each cross one of these segments. The power lines will have no direct
physical impact on the railroad grade itself and will have only minimal impact on the setting. No
. further work is recommended on either segment.
