. ,,. ~~~~ ~~. ~~NJV~~~E, COLORADO 80461
• P~NE 486-1512
October 10, 1981
Colorado Department of Health
Water Quality Control Division
4210 E. 11th Ave.
Denver, CO 80220
Attention: sandy Squire
Re: Discharge Pit Requirements for Gravel Operation
Dear Sandy:
Per our conversation on October 8, 1981, I am officially asking
you for a judgement as to whether our gravel and sand operation
requires a NDPES permit.
The operation is in the northwestern section of Lake County and
has been in operation for a number of years. As discussed with
you, the processing plant wash water is contained in a closed-
circuit with no discharge to the nearby stream. The sediment
ponds are sited such that runoff water from precipitation will
be collected and either reused or discharged by evaporation and
infiltration. Also, any water from dewatering will be used in
a similar manner.
Thus the only conceivable discharge from the system which would
affect water in the state 'of Colorado would be that which infil-
trates. This water will contain unpolluted suspended solids
which should filter out naturally by the time they intercept the
ground water table. Also with this sediment movement, a natural
filter will be built up in the region between the gravel pit
and the acquifer.
Please address this letter with a reasonable amount of haste
since the entire permit must be submitted to the Mined Land
Reclamation Board October 18, 1981. If it appears that an
application will be required, please contact me. If you have
any questions or comments, please feel free to call.
Sincerely,
~uA.-Glut NP1..Ei~~tA--C~~+---- __
Michael Henderson
Engineer
MH/ds
