This map unit ~s on a series of hogbacks that were formed :,
uneven erosion of highly tilted strata of sedimentary rock. The
native vegetation is mainly pinyon and juniper. Elevation is 7,400 to
8.,500 feet. The average annual precipitation is 12 to 1~ inches, the
average annual air temperature is 43 to 46 degrees F, and the average
fl•ost-free period ~s 95 to 115 days.
This unit ~s about 30 percent Redcameron soil, 30 percent Rock
outcrop, and 20 percent Teaspoon soil. Extremely steep areas consist
of extremely shallow soils antl up to about 55 percent Rock outcrop.
The Redcameron soil Is on west-facing scarp side slopes. Rock outcrop
iel on the Crests of hogbacks, often forming short ledges and cliffs,
on west-facing slopes as bands of sandstone and siltstone, and on
C eslst-facing side slopes, where the surface of the upper sandstone
si;rata is exposed. The Teaspoon soil is on east-facing side slopes.
Included ~n this unit is about 15 percent red Rentsac very
chiannary loam on west-facing slda slopes. These Rentsac sods have a
high content of channers but are otherwise similar to Redcameron
soils. Also included is about 5 percent deep Mussel sandy loam on
foot slopes and along drainagaways.
The Redcameron soil is shallow and wall drained. It formed i,n
residuum and colluvium derived dominantly from sandstone and
siltstone. Slope is 20 to 45 Dercent. Typically, the surface layer
is pinkish gray channery loam abeut 2 Inches thick. The substratum ~s
channery very fine sandy loam about 10 inches thick over hard,
fractured sandstone at a depth of 12 inches. The soil .s moderately
alkaline. The surface layer of about 10 percent of the areas of tn~s
soil is very channery.
~.5~
