..
woodlantl products sucn as firewood, fence posts, Cnr~stmas -reel,
~ and pinyon nuts are avai~able on this unit. Only foot slopes antl
ridges generally are accessible. Steepness of slope limits ~arvest~~-
in the other areas. The use of tree spades for remova~ of transplants
is Severely limited by shallow depths to bedrock and high content o`
rock fragments ~n the soil. The average site index for mixed pinyon
and Juniper is about 40.
Thinning the overstory generally enhances reproduction and
promotes the growth of grass and younger trees. To reduce the hazarc
of erosion and increased grass production, grasses should be seeded
following thinning or harvesting .of pinyon an Juniper. Grazing in
harvested areas should be deferred for at least 2 years to assure
development of sufficient plant cover to protect the soil from
erosion. The hazard of soil erosion is moderate on well designed
roads and in minimally disturbed areas.
This unit is poorly suited to homesite development, Tha main
limitations are steep slopes and shallow depths to bedrock.
This map unit is in capability subclass VIIe, nonirrigated. It ~s
~n the Pinyon-Juniper woodland site.
/C ~
