• Pit 4: In west-central portion of the area, adjacept to the creek; approximately I8 ~ -
feet to water level in trench; 12 inches of A horizon soil, then a continuous layer
of silty clay to a depth of 10 feet from surface; smaller gravel/cobble size
consistency than other pits, with less material 8 inches and larger, sand appeared _
to have some contamination from clay material. ,-
• Pit 5: In northern tip of area, on a bench approximately i 1 feet lower than the
~ area where the other four pits were dug; approximately 10 feet to water level in
ttench; 23 inches of A horizon soil, then 26 inches of clay subsoil; no gravel
present in the trench, only a lower level of fine grained material. ! ;
s .-
The gravel/cobble mne contains approximately 18 acres, anrt is defined on the west and
E-neFth sides by Hardscrabble Creek that cuts diagonally across the property, and on the
east and south sides by properly lines. Overall, the material excavated from the trenches
appears to be similar in size and consistency to oFl~r exposed deposits in the area,
including material from the active gravel pit rvn by Pioneer Sand Company, Inc. located
approximately oae~half mile to the northeast. There is between 7 and 10 feet of non-
gravel material above the gravel/cobble zone that would have to be removed prrior to
mining, but once this was done, there should be adequate material for a pendent mining
company to justify a small operation on the deposit. From the data that I have, Pm not
able to determine the tots[ thickness of the gtavel/cobble zone, but-the deepest trench (f
23 f~) did not dig out of the material. There is ground water evident in the alluvial Done,
but proper pit sequencing and pumping should control this during the mining process.
Please contact me if you have any questions or comments on this letter.
