71V--Hesperus Sardy Loan, 9 to 25 Percent Slopes
PRELIl~IIICARY DRAFT
Rev. 1-78, AF.A
This is a deep well drained soil or. sideslopes bordering drainage-
ways and fans of the mountains. It formed in noncalcareous, loamy
alluvium and colluvium derived fYOm gneiss and schist. Annual precipi-
tation ranges from 17 to 19 inches, frost free season is 70 to 125 days
and mean annual temperature is about 45° F. Elevation ranges from 6200
to 7600 feet. Slopes are strongly sloping to moderately steep.
Included in this unit are small areas of Breece and Trag soils in
similar positions. The Breece soils have sandy loam subsoils. The Trag
soils have thinner dark surfaces extending to less than 16 inches. Also
included are occasional small cret spots in lower toe slope positions.
-Typically the surface layer is dark grayish brown sandy loam shout
9 inches thick. The subsoil is a dark grayish brown loam about 22
inches thick. The substratum is brown, noncalcareous loam extending to
60 inches or more.
Permeability is moderate, (0.60-2.OOin/hr), available water capacity
is .high (0.11 in/in). Effective rooting depth is 60 inches or more.
Surface r::z:off is moderately rapid, water erosion hazard is moderate.
-Reaction is neutral (pH 6.6 tc 7.3).
These soils are used mainly for grazing. Some areas are used for
urban development, recreation and wildlife.
-Plant Adaptation - These soils are adapted to most climatically
adapted plants: Ornamental and grass plantings are easily established.
The steep slopes require special treatment. Areas should have a cover
of plants or mulch to protect the surface f7om erosion.
Community Development - Slope is the primary Limiting sail property,
wher~are'3~are-considered for building site development. Some excessive
seepage will occur on the Breece inclusions.
_Land capability Subclass:
Loam;{ Par': Range Site.
Hydrologic Group: B.
Plant Adaptability Group:
VIe, nonirrigated and irrigated.
M-1.
