• _ [ll of transecu in which species was encountered]/(total number of transects]) were,
not surprisingly, the three most dominant species. Lophopyrum elongatum was
encountered in all 26 transects. Other than Melilotus o~Fcinalis, a biennial species that
had a relative cover of 3.4%, no annual, biennial, or noxious herb species contributed a
elativ cover exceeding 2%.
Total herbaceous production was estimated at 54.8 grams per 1/4 square meter
quadrat, or 1956 pounds per acre (Table 5). This represenu a decrease from last year's
average value of 2414 pounds per acre, but is higher than 1991's 1692 pounds per acre.
Perennial, non-noxious plant species composed the bulk of the herbaceous production
total (91.5%), with 1790 pounds per acre.
A casual comparison of 1991 and 1992 precipitation percentages in last year's
report seemed to underscore that 1992 precipitation between February and June was
always higher than in the same month in 1991. This seemingly significant difference
• may have accounted for the large jump in productivity (e.g., 1692 vs. 2414 Ibs/acre
total production), though the total vegetative cover increased only by 0.97. Again this
year, a fairly large difference in productivity accompanied only a small difference in
cover.
96 of normal monthly precipitation in Paonia, Colo.
MONTH 1~2 1 3
January 45.4 247.2
February 903 240.8
March 247.8 176.1
April 68.0 89.8
May 177.4 225.6
June 73.8 27.4
.
