• Total Herbaceous Production:
The 1987 Findings Document indicates that quarter meter square quadrats were
to be used in estimating total herbaceous production. At each sample location, five
plots (A through E) were placed randomly along the length of a 25 meter transact.
Thus plots were located on astratified-random design and each individual production
plot was considered to he a single sample unit. All current annual herbaceous
production rooted within each quadrat was clipped, separated according to life form,
and bagged. The five life forms included perennial and annual grasses, perennial and
annual forhs, and noxious weeds. Me/ilolus ofjicutu/is (Yellow swee[clover), which is
a biennial, was bagged separately because its life form status was in doubt.
Following completion of the field work, all production samples were initially air
dried for three weeks or more anJ then oven-dried at 110 degrees Fahrenheit to a
• constant weight.
Species Diversity:
Species diversity was determined from multiple hit cover data. During cover
sampling, all herbaceous vegetation hits (first, second, third...) were recorded tier use
in calculating relative species cover upon which the species diversity standard was
based and was to be ,judged.
Species Identification;
Voucher specimens were collected and confirmed or identified by Dr. William
A. Weher, retired Curator of the University of Colorado herbarium as part of the 1991
study. One specimen was collected in ] 992 for llr. Weber's inspection. Otherwise, all
• species that were identified during the 1992 study were the same as those collected in
3
