• reclaimed surface. Sample starting points were determined in
i
the field through the use of compass and pacing. The
approximate locations of sample points are designated on the
enclosed map. Cover transects originated from marked sample
locations. Five production plots were randomly located along
the length of 25 meter transects.
In accordance with the Findings Document, a minimum of 10
cover transects and 25 production plots were collected over
the reclaimed surface. Initially, a maximum number of 70
production plots was mistakedly assumed. When sample adequacy
was not reached at 70 samples, additional production samples
were collected until sample adequacy was reached. Therefore,
cover and production samples were collected over both mines
until sample adequacy was reached.
Herbaceous Cover:
Total vegetative cover was sampled using an optical point
frame developed by Esco Associates. Point sitings were
located along a 25 meter transect stretched out from the
sample point location. The 50 points per transect (one point
at each half meter interval) comprised a single sample unit.
Cover was identified by plant species, or as rock, litter, or
bare ground. For the purposes of estimating cover, only first
• herbaceous hit data were used.
2
