GRASSES: Sharp Bros., Seed Co., Healy, Kansas and Northrup King and Co.,
Longmont, Colorado
FORBS: North plan Seed Producers, tdoscow, Idaho
SHRUBS: Native Plants, Salt Lake City, Utah
The two naturalized species crested and intermediate wheat grass are
commercially available.
NOTE: This species mixture was developed from recommendations from "Restoring
Big Game Range in Utah," A.P. Plummer; also results from "Surface Rehabilita-
tion of Land Disturbances resulting from Oil Shale Development," C.S.U. Report
1974; recommendations of Clyde George local S.C.S. agent; and extensive re-
search at Parachute Creek, Logan l•Jash and Piceance Creek by the Author.
The reclamation plan will proceed in the following manner:
STEP l: Final disposal slopes will be established with two level
areas or benches.
' STEP 2: Stored."soil like material" will be placed over the benches
at least six inches thick, any extra will be placed on the disposal pile
vahere the slope is less than 20 percent (mainly at the edges).
STEP 3: Soil tests of the "soil like material" just before planting
will determine fertilization (this will probably be minimal in quantity but
can be quite important on disturbed and stored material).
STEP 4: Broadcast seed with grass and fortis in late fall because (1)
it overcomes inherent dormancy, (2) cold winter temperatures stimulate seed-
lings into more rapid growth, (3) the longer period of available adequate
moisture produces larger seedlings, which can better withstand heat and drought
in summer., (4) loss of seed to seed-collecting animals is reduced because many
of these animals hibernate.
Ex.
