Lor'eneim Cannon .lLne Conlonr Grrs Cuhural Resources /nsenmry
• 5LA9573
This site is located on the south end of a gently sloping bench overlooking an unnamed drainage
that flows west into Lorencito Canyon. The site is a 28 x 10 meter, very sparse scatter of chipped
stone and ground stone artifacts. All chipped stone artifacts are made from felsite and consist of
one biface fragment, one utilized flake, and two tertiary flakes. In addition, there are two manos,
one of granite and one of quartzite. There is one piece of fire-cracked rock. Due to the paucity of
artifacts, this site is unlikely to contribute to our knowledge of the prehistory of the area. This
site is considered not eligible for the NRHP and considered to be anon-contributing element to
the proposed LCRHL.
5LA 9577
This site is in a saddle between the steep slope of the mountain to the east and the gentler slope
of the knoll to the west. The site is exposed in an erosional cut at the head of a small, unnamed
drainage that flows northwest into Lorencito Canyon. This site is located in an area that is
different from most of the other sites which are found on flatter terrain on east or south-facing
benches. Artifacts were only seen in the erosional channel but the drainage cut exposed a
substantial amount of soil deposition to the south. It is possible that there are buried cultural
remains. Soil deposition was 40 to 50 cm as indicated by the erosional cut. This site was also
different in that it consists entirely of chipped stone. All of the stone is felsite. The area with
artifacts only measures l4 x 6 meters but there are 60+ flakes representing all stages of lithic
reduction. This site may represent a knapping station solely for lithic production. No formal tools
• were observed but at least one core was observed, as well as primary, secondary, and tertiary
flakes. The site is recommended to have testing to determine if intact buried cultural remains are
present and to better assess the site's potential for eligibility for the NRHP. The site is considered
to be anon-contributing resource of the proposed LCRHL because it represents activity not
directly related to the context of the district.
5LA9578
This is a large site located on a bench projecting toward the confluence of Little Jeff Canyon
creek and Lorencito Canyon creek. The site is on the east-facing side of the bench and covers an
azea 120 x 150 meters. There are two areas with concentrations of manos and metates and an
area on the west side of the site on a small knoll that has a concentration of lithic artifacts and a
cache of eight manos. The lithic concentration on the knoll consists largely of felsite with 90+
flakes but there are two pieces of chert; one is white and one is brown and tan. The lithic
concentration has at least one core, plus numerous primary, secondary, and tertiary flakes. The
chipped stone on the flats on the east side of the site are all tertiary flakes of felsite and number
approximately 20. On the knoll neaz the lithic concentration is a cache of eight manos. In the
northeast portion of the site is one concentration of manos and metates and a second
concentration is to the south along the east boundary of the site. There are at least 19 manos and
5 metates, not counting the eight in the cache on the knoll. There are a few additional ground
stone artifacts scattered between concentrations and on the south end of the site. A well and
holding pond are at the north edge of the bench but no artifacts were observed that faz north on
. the bench. There is also a road to access [he well that cuts neaz the knoll and does impact a small
CnnmurCmaCulRcs-RPT(J'SJRrvI/April?', 200/ l2
