Lamm
Governor
November 7, 1985
Mr. Jim Douglas
Engineering Department
Routt County
P.O. Box 773598
Steamboat Springs, Colorado 80477

Re: Funk Pit Amendment - File No.: M-79-58
Dear Mr. Douglas:
I have reviewed this application for adequacy and have the following questions
and comments that must be addressed in detail at least 5 days prior to the
November 25, 1985 meeting of the Mined Land Reclamation Board:
A. Exhibit B - Mining Plan
1. In light of the high water table, how will the operator protect
surface and ground water from contamination caused by accidental
spills of petrolium products being stored on site or resulting from
the operation of an asphalt plant?
2. To what depth will gravel be mined below the existing ground
level?
3. What is the nature of the material immediately below the deposit
being mined?
B. Exhibit D - Water Resources
1. Please address how redirecting the ground water through a
perforated pipe to a nearby drainage ditch effects the hydrologic
balance. How will the operator minimize the effects to the
hydrologic balance caused by the outlined mine related activities?
2. The operator has indicated that the ground water will drain into
a nearby drainage ditch. Is the operator refering to the
intermittent stream? If not, where does the drainage ditch carry
the water to?
3. Please provide a letter from the Colorado Department of Health,
Water Quality Control Division indicating that an NPDES permit is
not necessary. If this would not be possible due to time
constraints, please provide the basis upon which the local
environmental health director feels that an NPDES permit is not
necessary.
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver.
