C

cavities expressed to surface is only 2.5 acres. Fls such, any potential
subsidence, which is only very remotely possible, is not expected to affect
the f•lahogany Zone or the strata above it, nor is any surface expression of
subsidence anticipated. Moreover, only very limited effects on groundwater
quality in the lower portion of the lower aquifer can possibly be expected,
even in the taorst case, due to the limited scale of operations. The same
is the case regarding future mineability of oil shale resources overlying
the Boies Bed.
In order to allow BLM to evaluate potential effects of subsidence on
--J
n
L.J
the groundwater and oil shale resources in the case of future commercial
development, IRI has endeavored to preliminarily assess the potential
effects of subsidence for a commercially-sized mining operation. In this
same context, IRI herein proposes a subsidence monitoring program to be
instituted concurrently with pilot plant operations to gather additional,
site specific data to further allow BLt•1 to assess subsidence effects
associated ~iith commercial-scale operations. These data are intended also
to aid IRI with future mine design efforts and overall project planning.
®c~
Cli~~ c~'neeria~g, mac.
RIFLE, COLORADO 81650
1-2
