INDUSTRIAL RESOURCES, INC.
PRELIP1INARY ROC Y, f~1ECHANICS EVALUATION
1.0 INTRODUCTION
A laboratory rock mechanics testing program was conducted by Dowell,

Inc. on selected core samples which were taken from holes drilled in
conjunction with the Industrial Resources' 1983 Bulk Sampling Project on
Sodium Lease C-0119986, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. Tests were conducted
on core samples that comprise the roof material as well as the mining zone
(Boies Bed). Calculations were made by Cliffs Engineering, Inc. with these
data as a basis, to preliminarily determine roof spans and pillar
dimensions for an underground solution mine. The general direction in the
mine design is for zero subsidence, However, if subsidence were to occur
for whatever reason, the proposed mine cavity configuration is designed to
minimize the potential adverse effects of any subsidence. In addition, a
subsidence monitoring plan is proposed that is intended to verify the mine
design parameters for future use in designing a commercially-sized solution
mine.
The extent of any disturbances associated with the operation of the

proposed pilot solution mining operation will be quite limited. A total of
only four cavities (three new cavities and continued operation of the small
cavity initiated during the Bulk Sampling Phase) will be be used during
pilot solution mining operations.
