This topsoil. will be used af.tt;r f.he mining operation is
completed for reclamation purposes. Mini.ny of the gravel
material can begin at this point..
After the area has been min~~d of the gr.aee], all vertical.
excavation areas and other steep slopes shall be ]eveled to 7:1
slopes or less and smoothed. The disYUrhod area should then bo
reseeded to permanent cover suited to the site.
The reseeding shall follow the CRTTTCAL AREA PLANTING
specification in conjunction with the MULCHING and RANGE SEEDING
specifications. Copies of thr;F specif.icati~ns are at.t.ached.
Recommended grasses for seeding are western wh!atgrass,
switchgrass, big bluestem, green need.legrass, and yellow Indian
grass. It is best to drill thr--. grass seed with a grass dri71
leaving the seed covered l/4 to '/4 inch deep. Tf broadcastin7
the seed is a desired option, the seed must be incorporated into
the soil not to exceed a depth of 3/9 inch. This ran be
performed by raking, harrowing, or other acceptable methods of
Seed coverage. The grass seeding may be accomplished anytime
between or during the dates of November 1 and April 30.
Attached is a GRASS SRF,DTNC PLANNF,D worksheet showing
recommended grasses to be seeded into the reclaimed site.
Because the grass seeding i.s following a rrit.ir_al area planting,
the grass seed needed for seeding '.;ill be two times thr amount
seeded under normal grass seed planting conditions. Therefore,
column five (5) includes two times the pure live seed needed fir
drilling. if broadcast is desired, the required reed will. bc. two
times (again) the amount of shed in column five.
Mulching can be completed h}~ applyinr, straw or grass hay to
the site (after drilling the grass seed) at Y.hc rare of 4,(10©
pounds per aore. Methods for anchoring the straw in place is
outlined in the MULCHING sner.ifir•ation, i.nc7uded using ,~ straight:
disc as a straw rrimper_
