environmental-control techniques. An estimated three million dollars of
research work has been conducted at the mine site since 1976. The
• Science and Education Administration, the Bureau of Land Management and
the Soil Conservation Service headline as governmental agencies asso-
ciated with research at the mining operations. Likewise, Energy Fuels
has cooperated with graduate and research work undertaken by several
Colorado universities and colleges, such as, Colorado State University,
Colorado School of Mines, and University of Denver. Extensive study and
research work has been conducted on soils, overburden, vegetation,
wildlife, weather, hydrology, water quality and air quality.
Energy Fuels employs an Environmental Coordinator, a range scientist,
several environmental technicians, and up to ten seasonal employees to
plan, implement and supervise the reseeding and land restoration pro-
grams. In addition, three Scraper/Reclamation Foreman and nearly 50
employees who, with an equipment investment of approximately five million
dollars, work in removing and placing topsoil in storage areas, recon-
touring and grading the mined lands and replacing the topsoil before
• seeding.
The efforts of Energy Fuels in reclamation and environmental preser-
vation have been frequently recognized by State, Federal and local
authorities in conjunction with several environmental groups. In 1978,
the Routt County Soil Conservation District presented Energy Fuels an
"Environmental Award" for rehabilitation of affected lands.
In 1978, Energy Fuels became the first coal company in Colorado to have
reclaimed areas released from bond. Prior to bond release, mine-recla-
mation specialists and range scientists from the Routt County Soil
Conservation District, the Colorado State University Cooperative Exten-
sion Service, and USDA, Agricultural Research Service, Forage and Range
Management Research inspected the subject areas and agreed that recla-
mation had been completed to the point that the final bond should be
released and that the areas should again be subjected to livestock
grazing.
• -25-
