operations. The reasons for not including Mine No. 3 in this applica-
tion are several; Mine No. 3 is approximately six miles from Mines No. 1
• and 2 and includes an adjacent underground mine, unlike Mines No. 1
and 2. Moreover, Mine No. 3 has separate loading and support facilities.
Finally, Mine No. 3 encompasses no federal coal.
The Energy Mines No. 1 and 2 are geographically contiguous, but their
respective coal seams are geologically separated by a large sandstone
formation. The primary mining target in the Energy Mine No. 1 area has
been the deeper and thicker Wadge Coal Seam, whereas the mining objec-
tive for the Energy Mine No. 2 has been the thinner and shallower Fish
Creek Coal Seam. The primary target at Energy Mine No. 3 is the Wadge
Coal Seam.
Mine No. 1 - Tonnage, Location and Ownership. Operations at Energy Mine
No. 1 began in 1962; the yearly coal production records are shown in
Table 1, Historical Production Rates, page 3. Production from the
Energy Mine No. 1 continues to dominate the total output from the three
operations and will continue to do so as the area, known as Eckman Park,
becomes permitted under this Application.
The current Energy Mine No. 1 consists of private and federal lands.
Private lands are found in Sections 28, 29, 31, 32 and 33 in Township 5
North, Range 86 West and Sections 8, 9, 17 and 18 in Township 4 North,
Range 86 West. The entire Federal Coal Lease C-16284 and portions of
Federal Coal Leases D-052547 and C-081330 are within the perimeter of
the existing Energy Mine No. 1. Federal Coal Lease C-22644 is located
in the area encompassed by this Application. The boundaries of the
Federal Leases at Energy clines No. 1 and 2 are delineated on Figure 4,
Permit Areas and Federal Lease Boundaries. Energy Fuels owns or con-
trols the surface acreage overlying the entire Energy Ptine No. 1 area.
Mine No. 2 - Tonnage, Location and Ownership. Coal production from
Energy Ptine No. 2 was started in 1972; the yearly coal production
records are shown on Table 1, Historical Production Rates, page 3.
• Over one million tons of coal were extracted from Energy Pine No. 2
-11-
