~~ r
UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE
SOIL CONSERVATION SERVICE
301 South Howes, Room 327, Ft. lips, CO 80521
March 11, 1980
r
Mr. Murray E. Manley
P. 0. Box 1159
Ft. Collins, CO 80522
RE: Reclamation of Mining Area (GLASS, John F., Sr .)
Dear Mr, Manley:
-- The area, northw~ast of the city of Ft. Collins, to be mined in
Mr. Glass's request i:; presently in irrigated cropland, but has the
soils found in the major range sites of Overflow and Wet Meadow, as
shown on the map.
The Overflow Ranf;e Site here consists of level soil that is loamy
alluvial, moderately sleep, with sands and gravels at depths of 40 inches.
Water tables occur se:~sonally at depths of 40 to 60 inches. The Wet
Meadow Range Site has finer texture of clay loam alluvial soil with sand
and gravel at depth o1: 12 to 40 inches. This soil is somewhat poorly
drained and has seasocialy water table occurring at depths of 24 to 40
inches. Soils of both range sites would be classed as "prime land."
~~~
The potential nal:ive vegetation of these range sites\would include:
9witchgrass, Bi b ues;t~m, Indiangrass, Western wheatgrass, 5>_de-oats
grama and Blue grama.
When reclaiming t:he mined area, the topsoil should be stockpiled
and then used to coven the spoiled areas at depth of 12 inches or
greater. Any part not. leveled should have slopes of 3:1 or flatter.
If irrigation is not used for starting vegetation, then new seedings
should be mulched with straw to improve the chances for success. This
will help prevent wind'. erosion and shade the ground to help retain
moisture. 40004k/Ac. of long straw should be anchored immediately after
distributing with mulcher blades thaC will not cut the straw.
A dryland mixture of grasses I would recommend is:
Thickspike wheatgrass (Critana)
Side-oats grama (Vaughn)
Switchgrass (Nebr. 28)
(cont.)
5'~~FPLS /A c .
2 ~I~PLS /A c .
1 }~kPLS /A c .
9 4~PLS/Ac.
