Banks and Gesso, LLC
Exhibit D -Mining Plan ~~~~~` ~~~
OCT 0 2 2006
IntrOdUCtiOn Division of Reclamation,
Mining and Safety
The proposed Sundance Resource site is a sand and gravel extraction operation located
approximately five (5) miles south of Fountain in EI Paso County, Colorado. Lafarge has
a Gravel Property Lease with the property owners, Sundance Investments, for the
subject property. Total mineable acreage is estimated at 437 acres. There will be
additional acreage affected by stockpiles of topsoil and overburden placed around the
periphery of the Phase I pit to visually screen aboveground plant operations. The total
proposed affected area is 479 acres.
Lafarge plans to extract sand and gravel from the property, process it on site and sell it
as is or use it to make concrete and asphalt. Blasting will not be necessary to recover
the reserves onsite. Reserve estimates based on test pits and borehole samples show
30 million tons of gravel contained within the proposed disturbance boundary. The
Sundance Resources operation will process up to 2.0 million tons of aggregate per year
and mine approximately 25 acres per year. Lafarge estimates a mine life of 15+ years,
although market conditions will determine the life of the mine. Lafarge intends to use the
Sundance site as a replacement for the current Lafarge Fountain Pit.
Initial Operations
Initial operations will consist of preparation of the processing area and the freshwater
(stormwater management and dewatering) pond. The freshwater pond will first be
stripped of topsoil and overburden (to be temporarily stockpiled at the western boundary
along with topsoil and overburden from the processing area). Aggregates beneath the
freshwater pond will be recovered and the footprint will then be backfilled with
overburden to achieve functional grading for the basin. Processing will be established
on an aggregate base by stripping topsoil and overburden and, if necessary, backfilling
with recovered aggregates to establish grading for drainage.
Mining Methods
Mining operations will include topsoil and overburden stripping. As areas are cleared
and stripped, previously mined areas will receive backfill material to establish the
permanent design side slopes and/or fill to near-existing grades (see below and Exhibits
Sundance Sand and Gravel Resource 06015
Lafarge West, Inc. 6 September 2006
