II West Coal Refuse Facility Background Information
Sedimentation Pond E Retaining Structure
3.0 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
OMLLC plans to construct a retaining structure, approximately 120 feet south of the toe
of the proposed II West Coal Refuse Facility and adjacent to the existing Union Pacific
Railroad (iJPRR) tracks, within the railroad right-of-way, which extends 100 feet to each
side of the center-line of the tracks. The retaining structure will be constructed to
intercept and retain storm water runoff and associated sediment from the coal refuse
facility disturbance area, in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements of the
Colorado Division of Minerals & Geology. The retaining structure has been designed
such that it will retain an estimated peak 4-year sediment load (to elevation 6,026.96')
along with the 25-yeaz storm event, (an additional 2.5 feet of water to elevation
6,029.45'). The retaining structure will be a cantilevered structure approximately 155
feet in length with a hydraulic height of approximately 14 feet. The retaining structure
will be keyed into the sandstone bedrock at the foundation shear key and the abutments.
The design plans for the concrete retaining wall are given in Appendix A.
•
•
•
3
