Zhcwmr~~e
~.~ awe
n~....i~i s .
• The third and final recommendation involves continued revegetation efforts and / or remediation of ~
currently reclaimed areas, especially those that are south or west facing. It would be prudent to avoid any
~ disturbance of currently revegetated surfaces as such disturbance will stronoly encourage invasion by
cheatgrass to the exclusion of most other taxa. In the interest of attempting to increase species diversity
of currently revegetated south and west facing areas, interseeding could occur. Suchinterseeding should
`~ be heavily weighted toward drought-tolerant shrubs, and should occur by pedestrian means using belt
~ ~ mounted /hand operated seed distributors ("whirlygigs"). Mechanical measures will disturb the soil
r
Q°` surface thereby further encouraging cheatgrass. The 12-acre CRDA # 2 could be interseeded in this
~''~p~~ manner in about five manhours. The recommend mix for this interseeding effort should be as follows:
i s Lbs !acre Seeds ! Ft'
Galleta (fiilaria jamesi~) (warm-season grass) 1.0 3.65
Alkali sacaton (Sporobolus airoides) (warm-season grass) 0.1 4.04
Shadscale (Atrfplex confertifolia) 4.0 5.96
Black greasewood (Sarcobatus vermiculatus) 2.0 9.64
Winterfat (Ceratoides /anata) 2.0 2.60
Prostrate kochia (Kochia prostrata) (cheatgrass competitor) 1.0 9.36
'
TOTAL 10.1 35.25
1•

1
1
,Wt,.~
~~+ ~(~cu
1
•
As indicated on Map 1, significant portons (-21 acres) of both CRDA # 1 and # 2 have yet to be
revegetated. Depending on the seed mix used to reclaim these surfaces, diversity of the overall area
could be enhanced. Such an enhancement would be similar to the concept of "community diversity". To
effect such diversity, the seed mix utilized should contain at least a few different taxa, or different
quantities of those taxa already existing in currently revegetatod areas. In this regard, the following seed
mix (as modified from the mix used for existing revegetation on CRDA # 1 and # 2) could be used for
future revegetation efforts.
Species
Bluebunch wheatgrass Agropyron spicafum ~ w
Thickspike wheatgrass Agropyron dasystachyum ~~"'
Slender wheatgrass Agropyron trachycau/um
Western wheatgrass Agropyron smithii
Russian wildrye E/ymus juncaus
Indian ricegrass Oryzopsis hymenoides
Bottlebrush squirreltail Sitanion hystrix n.+.~
Needle & Thread Stipa somata
Gallefa Hilada%amesii (warm-season grass)
Alkall sacaton Sporobolus airoides (warm-season grass)
Evening primrose Oenothera hookerii
Palmer penstemon Penstemon Palmeri
Prostrate kochia Kochia prostrata
Shadscale Atriplex conferbtolia
Four-wing saltbush Afriplex canescens
'81ack greasewood Saroobatus vermicu/atus
TOTAL
s /acre Seeds / Ft2
2.0 5.372
2.0 7.071
1.0 3.650
1.0 2.525
1.0 4.017
2.0 6.474
0.5 2.204
1.0 2.640
2.0 7.300
0.2 8.072
0.25 7.461
0.25 3.500
0.5 4.680
3.0 4.570
0.5 0.597
1.0 4.821
20.2 77.584
Page 10
1
