SPRAY DRIFT MANAGEMENT
The inumction of many equipment and weather-related factors determines the
potential for spiny drift The applicaur is responsible for considering all these
facmrs when making application decisions.
AVOIDING SPRAY DRIFT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE APPL]CA-
TOR.
IMPORTANCE OF DROPLET SIZE
The most effective way to reduce drift poundal is u apply large droplets (> 150-
200 microns). The best drift management strategy is u apply the largest dropkta
that provide sufficient coverage and control. The presrnce of unsitive species
nearby, the environmental conditions, and pest pressure may affect how an ap-
plicamr balances drift contra] and coverage. APPLYING LARGER DROPLETS
REDUCES DRIFT' POTENTIAL, BUT WILL NOT PREVEFIT DRIFT' IF AP-
PLICATIONS ARE MADE IMPROPERLY OR UNDER UNFAVORABLE EN-
VIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS! See Wind, Temperature end Humidity, and
Surface Temperamre Imversions sections of this label.
Controlling Drople7 Size-0eneral Techniques
• VolumtiUse high flow rate nozzles to apply the highest practical spiny vol-
ume. Nozzles with higher rated flows produce larger droplets.
• Pressure-Use the Tower spiny pressures recommended for the nozzle. Higher
pressure reduces droplet size and does mot improve canopy prnetmtion. WHEN
HIGHER FLOW RATES ARE NEEDED, USE AHIGHER-CAPACITY NOZ.
ZLE WSTEAD OF WCREASING PRESSURE.
• Nozzle Type-Use a nozzle type that is designed for the intended application.
With most nozzle types, narrower spiny anglesproducelarger droplets. Consider
using low-drift nozzles.
CantrolGng Drople7 Size-Airtrafr (Helicopter)
Number of Nozzles-Use the minimum number of nozzles with the highest flow
mu that provides uniform coverage.
Nozzle Orientation-0ricnting nozzles so that the spray is emitted backwards,
parallel to the aus[rcam, will produce largtt droplets than other orientations.
Nozzle Type-Solid stream nozzles (such as disc and core with swirl plak
removed) oriented straight back produce larger droplets than other nozzle types.
Beam Length and Height
Boom Length (helicopter)-Use a boom length and position that prevcnta droplets
from enuring the sour vortices.
Boom Height (helicopter}-Application dsom than 10 feet above the canopy
increases the poundal for spray drift
Boom Height (ground)-Setting the boom at the lowest height which provides
uniform coverage reAuces the expomre of droplets to evaporation and wind. The
boom should remain level with [he target and have minimal bounce.
WIND
Drift poundal increases at wind speeds ofless than 3 mph (due m variable direction
and inversion potential) or more than 10 mph. However, many factors, including
droplet size and equipment type determine drill poun[ial at any given wind speed.
AVOID APPL]CATIONS DURING GUSTY OR WINDLESS CONDITIONS.
Note: Local urain can influence wind patterns. Every epplicaror should be
familiar with local wind patterns end how they effect spray drift.
TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY
When making applications in hot and dry conditions, setup equipment m produce
larger droplets k seduce effects of evaporation.
SURFACE TEMPERATURE INVERSIONS
Drift potential is high during a surface tempemmue inversion. Surface inversions
restrict vertical air mixing, which rouses small suspended droplets ro remain close
to the ground and move latemlty in a concrntmted cloud. Surface inversions are
characurized by increasing kmpemturc with altitude and arc common on nights
with limiud cloud cover and light to no wind. Thry begin to form as the sun
sets and often continue inro the morning. Thev presence can be indicated by
ground fog; however, if fog is not present inversions can also be identified by
the movement of smoke from a ground sourer or an airemfl smoke genemur.
Smoke that layers and moves lakmlly in a concentraud cloud (under low wind
conditions) indicates a surface inversion, while smoke that moves upward and
rapidly dissipates indicaes good vertical ev mixing.
