The pit
is generally in the flood plain of Tomichi Creek.
Tomichi Creek is a tributary of the Gunnison River with a drainage
area of 880 square miles. The drainage basin is mountainous.
Principal tributaries are Cochetopa Creek and Quartz Creek.
Runoff consists mostly of snowmelt. High flows occur in May and
June.
GROUND WATER
The ground water table is near the surface and almost all of the
gravel is saturated. The pit must be dewatered as the excavation
proceeds. The saturated stream alluvium has a depth of approximately
70 feet.
WATER QUALITY
Water in Tomichi Creek and the ground water which will fill the
lakes is of good quality. It is potable and suitable for fish and
wildlife and irrigation.
