Northfield Partners LLC (Northfield) is requesting permission to
perform coal exploration activities including obtaining geologic and hydrologic
data in Fremont County, Colorado. During the spring of 2005, Northfield
intends to explore Sections 13 and 14, Township 19 South, Range 70 West;
west of Florence, Colorado and south of the intersection of State Highway
115 and MacKenzie Blvd. Appendix A contains a vicinity map and drilling
location map.
3. Right to Enter
The proposed exploration activities wilt occur within property
boundaries owned by Gus and Dan Slanovich, aka Chandler Creek
' Companies. Northfield has entered into a lease with Slanovich to prospect,
mine, remove and process coal. The CONFIDENTIAL lease, including legal
description, is provided in Appendix B.
**This area is the subject of NOI X-91-154-21,Energy Fuels Coal, Inc. dated
September ii, 1991, referred to as the Northfield project. Portions of this
submission are excerpts from the previously approved notification.
4. Site Description
The proposed vicinity contains hogback ridges and intermittent
washbeds with scattered patches of western grassland. Precipitation
drainage flows northward to the Arkansas River, approximately 1 to 2 miles
to the north. Soils include Fort Collins loam, Louviers-Travessilla complex
and Travessilla rock outcrop. Topsoil ranges from 0 to 8 inches in depth and
overlay loam, gravel and bedrock. Soil descriptions are provided in Appendix
C.
Hydrologically, the proposed exploration lies east of the axis of the
' Chandler syncline south of Canon City in Fremont County, Colorado. The
east limbs of the syncline dip approximately 3 degrees to the west. Geologic
formations include the Pierre Shale, Trinidad Sandstone, Vermejo Formation
' and the Raton Formation. The proposed exploration drilling will terminate
within the Vermejo Formation that extends a total depth of 925 feet.
' In the exploration area, the Raton Formation consists of a massive,
cliff forming conglomeratic sandstone with minor interbeds of siltstone and
mudstone. The Vermejo Formation consists of a series of coal seams and
' sandstones, interbedded with numerous mudstones and siltstones. The
interbedded mudstones and siltstones act as aquicludes and greatly restrict
vertical ground water movement. According to records at the State
Engineer's office, existing Vermejo wells in the Canon City field have low
yields and are expected to range from one to ten gallons per minute. The
permeability and storage properties of the Vermejo Formation are very low.
' No aquifers will be encountered as researched on the State Engineers
website.
