Elevation is 5,800 to 7,500 feet. 4he <br />r7 <br />average annual precipitation is about 15 to ]r8 inches, the average annual <br />air tenperature i.s 47 to ~9 degrees F, and the average frost-free season is <br />rzf <br />115 to 145 days. <br />This unit is 50 percent Ayon very stony loam and 50 percent Capulin <br />loam. both of. these soils are in all areas of the unit and generally <br />cannot be separated in mapping at the scale used. <br />Included in this unit are narrow bands of a Shingle silty clay loam <br />that is st~allar to shale. <br />~-- The Ayon soil is deep and well drained. It formed in alluvium and <br />colluvium derived dominantly fran basalt. Typically, the surface layer is <br />very stony loan S inches thick. Zhe upper 26 inches of the underlying <br />gra+Cl~~ <br />material is very LOED3~ loam aid the lower part to a depth of 60 inches or <br />more is extremely gravelly loam. The soil is moderately alkaline and <br />calcareous throughout. <br />Permeability of the Ayon soil is moderate.
