eh <br />ESPEY, HUSTON 6 ASSOCIATES, INC. <br />• <br />Competing Series: These soils closely resemble the soils of the Thayne <br />series but differ in having hues redder than IOYR. They differ from the <br />Osmund series in having distinct ca horizons and in being calcareous at a <br />shallower depth. They differ from the Border series in lacking a textural <br />B2t horizon. They differ from the Woosley series in having redder hues, <br />in lacking a B2t horizon and in being more gravelly. <br />Typical Pedon: Redthayne soils consist of gravelly loam. <br />Al 0 to 5 inches; grayish brown (10YR5/2 dry) to very dazk greyish <br />brown (10YR3/2 moist) gravelly loam; strong very fine granulaz <br />structure; soft dry, very friable moist; approximately 30 percent of <br />the horizon is gravel; noncalcazeous, pH 7.4; lower boundazy cleaz <br />and smooth. (4 to 12 inches thick) <br />• A12 5 to 9 inches; grayish brown (10YR5/2 dry) to very dazk <br />greyish-brown (10YR3/2) moist; gravelly loam; strong very fine <br />granulaz structure; slightly hazd dry, very friable moist; approxi- <br />mately 40 percent of the horizon is gravel and cobble; noncal- <br />cazeous, pH 7.6; lower boundazy cleaz and smooth. (3 to 11 inches <br />thick) <br />B2 9 to 18 inches; brown (7.5YR5/3), dazk brown (7.SYR4/2) moist; <br />gravelly loam; moderate fine subangulaz blocky structure; slightly <br />hazd dry, very friable moist; there aze a few shiny patches <br />presumed to be silicate clay on the horizontal faces of the <br />aggregates and coating some of the rocks; approximately 40 <br />percent of the horizon is gravel; non-calcazeous, pH 7.6; lower <br />boundazy clear and smooth.
