If a high water table is encountered during the
removal of gravel, dewatering is required.
For dewatering of the pit and for runoff from the wash all operation,
a settling pond is used to control discharge into the river. In both cases
all water used is returned to the river. Normally, there is no direct
discharge into the Animas River, but a permit to discharge (No. CO-0033090)
has been issued by the Colorado Department of Health. That office has
reviewed the pit operation on site and found no problems.
An irrigation ditch runs from North to South and lays just 4Jest of
the pit site. Pit operations have had no effect on the flow of this ditch.
The one well in the immediate area is used for the ready mix concrete
operation and is rated at a maximum sustained pumping rate of 20 gallons per
minute. A permit for this well (016676-F) was issued by the Colorado
Division of lJater Resources (See attached copy). The function of this
well has not been affected by pit operations which indicates that the
dewatering does not create a harmful draw down of the water table.
The gravel washing operation requires approximately two-thirds of
one cubic foot per second (2/3 cfs) while in operation and an expected
total of 14 acre-feet per year. The consumptive loss of this type of
operation is estimated at 1% by the Division of Water Resources, and a
mater right is being applied for through the District Court.
