Section 779.20 (c) Continued.
• At lower Foidel Creek the stream was electrofished in an upstream
direction from the road crossing to the dam of the small impound-
ment or about 100 yards. Approximately 200 yards of stream were
fished in an upstream direction (about 100 yards above and below
the USGS gaging station) cn lower Fish Creek. All fish captured
were identified to species, measured, and condition noted.
Results of Wildlife Habitat Investigations
Small Mammals. A total of twenty-one mammal species were recorded
during the study shown in Table 44 Total Number of Observations
of Mammalian Species on Proposed Mine Expansion Area During August,
1975. Nomenclature in Table 44 follows that of Armstrong (1972).
Aspen and oak brush had the greatest diversity; 14 and 13 species
respectively; eight species were recorded in sagebrush and only two
in dry meadow. Oak brush and aspen supported a more diverse mammal
• fauna than sagebrush or dry meadow because a greater array of
microhabitats is associated with woodland growth-form.
Many mammals utilize more than one community (See Table 44, Total
Number of Observations of Mammalian Species on Proposed Piine Expansion
Area During August, 1975. Among small mammals, all species trapped
in 1975 occurred in woodland and oak brush areas, but only deer
mice were trapped in sagebrush and meadow communities. Since the
diversity was greatest in oak brush followed by aspen woodlands,
these two communities appear to be the more important habitats for
small mammals. The six species trapped in oak brush range from
carnivorous to seed and vegetation consumers, suggesting not only
a diverse habitat but a diverse food resource base within this
community.
The mammal composition in dry meadow and sagebrush was less diverse
than in the woodland communities. Of the eight species recorded
• in sagebrush and the two in dry meadow (see Table 44, Total Number
779-147
