_ii_i i ii i ii ii iii_i iii
Doc Date:12/11/2001
r
LJ
covered east-sloping, small alluvial basin on the mesa edge at
an elevation of 5940 feet. The site consists of a total of 14
artifacts: 2 bifaces, 5 utilized flakes, 1 chunk, 2 manos and
a groundstone fragment. The site has been disturbed by
chaining and sheet-wash erosion. Because it is in poor
condition and is not likely to yield additional significant
information, it is field evaluated as not eligible to the
NRHP.
Site SMN3763 is an diffuse open lithic scatter, yet it
contains artifacts indicating an open campsite. The cultural
materials are distributed over an area about 275 meters by 90
meters. It is located on a pinyon/juniper covered north-
sloping, small, alluvial basin on the mesa top at an elevation
of 5980 feet. The site consists of a total of 25 artifacts:
1 biface fragment, 2 scrapers (1 collected), 7 utilized
flakes, 2 utilized blades, 1 chunk, 3 cores, 5 flakes, 1 mano,
1 slab metate and 1 fragmented metate. The collected end-
scraper is typical of a type often found in early Ute sites
throughout western Colorado (Figure 2). The site has been
slightly disturbed by chaining and sheet-wash erosion. The
site has no clear focus and no apparent features. Because it
has not yielded and is not likely to yield additional
• significant information, it is field evaluated as not eligible
to the NRHP.
Site 5MN3764 exhibits artifact concentrations that are
characteristic of camping and lithic tool production. The
cultural materials are distributed over a broad area which
measures 240 meters by 30 meters and follows the edge of the
mesa top at elevations between 5980 and 6020 feet. Avery low
density lithic scatter is spread over most of the site area
but there are two distinct loci. Locus A contains 1 end-
scraper (collected), 4 chert flakes, and 1 large quartzite
core. The collected end-scraper is typical of a type often
found in early Ute sites throughout western Colorado (Figure
2). Locus B is a lithic reduction area that includes 25+
quartzite flakes and l chert flake. The remainder of the site
yielded only a chopper and 4 flakes.
The site is disturbed by an existing road, historic land
cultivation and erosion. It has not yielded nor is it likely
to yield additional significant information, thus it is field
evaluated as not eligible to the NRHP.
Site SMR3765 is an historic root cellar located on the
interior of the mesa top. It measures about 90 feet ~-W by 20
feet N-S. Although the roof is gone, roof support poles
. remain. The site apparently served as a crop storage area
14
