Waste Mtnimizatton/Pollution Prevention
Waste minimization and pollution prevention are two terms that are common in industry today. Waste minimization includes
reducing the amount of waste at the source through changes in industrial processes, and reuse and recycling oJwastes for the
origina or some other purpose such as materials recovery or energy production. Pollution prevention goes hand-in-hand with
waste minimization.
/f the waste is eliminated at the front of the line, it will not have to be treated at the end o the line. The direct bene/I'ts to the
industry are often significant -both in terms of increased profit and in public relations. is program can affect all areas of
process and waste control with which our industry deals. Elimination or reduction ofa wastewarerpollutant can also result in a
reduction of an air pollutant or a reduction in the amount of hazardous materials Yhat you have to handle anrUor dispose.
This discharge permit does not specifically dictate waste minimization conditions at this time. We strongly encourage the
permittee to develop a waste minimization plan. Several industries have aheady developed plans and found that im [ementation
resulted in substantial savings. Both the Colorado Department ofPublic Health andEnvironmentandEPA have in~rmafron and
resources available to help you explore this topic.
Revised 124/Z005 -
