• XTO-E Torriorthents - HaplarRids,_moderately steep to steep
These deep, well drained and excessively drained soils are on
moderately steep to steep terrace edges, mesa edges, and hill sides.
They formed in gravelly and cobbly alluvium. This unit is 50 percent
Torriorthents and 30 percent Haplargids. The Haplargids are on the less
sloping portions of the map unit. Elevation 1s 6,000 to 8,500 feet. The
average annual precipitation is about 14 to 19 inches, the average annual
air temperature is 45 to 50 degrees F., and the average frost-free season
is 100 to 130 days.
These soils vary considerably but typically, the Torriorthents surface
layers are gravelly or cobbly loam or fine sandy loam. The substratums are
very gravelly or cobbly outwash material. Typically, the Haplargids surface
• layers are gravelly or cobbly loam or fine sandy loam. The subsoils are very
cobbly or very gravelly loam, sandy clay loam, or fine sandy loam. The sub-
stratums are very gravelly or cobbly outwash material.
Included in this unit is about 15 percent soils overlying bedrock at
depths of 40 inches or less and small areas of shale and sandstone outcrops.
Permeability of these soils vary depending on the texture of [he parent
material. Available water capacity is low. Effective rooting depth is 40
inches or more. Runoff is rapid, and the hazard of water erosion is severe.
This mapping unit is used primarily for rangeland or wildlife habitat.
Rangeland vegetation on these soils consists mainly of western wheaC-
grass, Indian ricegrass, needle and thread, blue grama, mutton grass,
fendlers three awn, ~unegrass, big sagebrush, rabbitbrush, pinon pine, Rocky
Mountain muniper, Ponderosa pine, mountain mahogany, serviceberry, snowberry,
. and Cambel oak.
