I'
4.0 LAND USE
According to the BLM, the main land uses for Third Park include cattle grazing, wildlife habitat
' and recreation. Wildlife, cattle and the land they inhabit are of the most concern. The crucial
winter range for both elk and mule deer encompasses a portion of this area. Also, the
' springtime is a very sensitive and important period for regrowth and rehabilitation of vegetation
following the harsh winter months (Bureau of Land Management, 1984).
' There are five cattle grazing allotments within the area and one unallotted parcel of land, which
is still available for leasing, as shown on Figure 4-1. Also, Table 4-1 lists the grazing allotments,
critical periods, management status, and total public land (acres).
' TABLE 4-1
ALLOTMENTS AND THEIR MANAGEMENT STATUS, ACREAGE
AND CRITICAL PERIOD
ALLOTMENT MANAGEMENT TOTAL PUBLIC
NAME STATUS ACRES CRITICAL PERIOD
Uncompahgre Maintain 13,702 -
Bench
' Tabeguache Creek Improve 17,912 4/15=5115
Third Park Common Maintain 4,270
Second Park Custodial 750 -
.
